Vaginal Reconstructive Surgery for Prolapse in Katy, TX
When pelvic organ prolapse causes a bulge, pressure or trouble emptying the bladder or bowel, reconstructive surgery can restore support and comfort.
Vaginal reconstructive surgery, sometimes called revagination, repairs the support of the vaginal walls and pelvic organs when they have dropped because of prolapse. Most repairs are performed through the vagina using your own tissues, with no abdominal incision. At our Katy office, Dr. Solafa Elshatanoufy, a board-certified urogynecologist, helps you decide whether surgery is right for you and which approach fits your body and goals.

What Is Vaginal Reconstructive Surgery?
Revagination is not a standard medical term, but it is sometimes used to describe surgery that restores the normal shape and support of the vagina. In medical terms, this is called pelvic reconstructive surgery or prolapse repair.
Pelvic organ prolapse happens when the muscles and connective tissue of the pelvic floor weaken, allowing the bladder, uterus, top of the vagina or rectum to drop into or beyond the vaginal opening. Childbirth, aging, menopause, chronic constipation, heavy lifting and genetics all play a role.
Not everyone with prolapse needs surgery. Pelvic floor therapy and a pessary help many women. Surgery is an option when symptoms are bothersome and you prefer a longer-lasting solution.
Symptoms That May Lead to Surgery
Surgery is considered when prolapse symptoms affect your daily life.
Prolapse symptoms
- A bulge you can see or feel at the vaginal opening
- Pelvic pressure or heaviness that worsens through the day
- Difficulty emptying the bladder or a weak stream
- Needing to press on the vagina to urinate or have a bowel movement
- Discomfort during intercourse
- Irritation or spotting from exposed vaginal tissue
Types of prolapse that can be repaired
- Anterior prolapse (cystocele): the bladder bulges into the front vaginal wall
- Posterior prolapse (rectocele): the rectum bulges into the back vaginal wall
- Uterine prolapse: the uterus descends into the vagina
- Vaginal vault prolapse: the top of the vagina drops after hysterectomy
- Perineal laxity: stretching of the tissue at the vaginal opening
Is Surgery Right for You?
Surgery may be a good choice if:
- Prolapse symptoms bother you and limit your activities
- A pessary is uncomfortable, falls out or is not your preference
- Pelvic floor therapy has not given enough relief
- Prolapse is affecting bladder or bowel emptying
If you may want future pregnancies, surgery is usually delayed. Your overall health, activity level and sexual activity also shape the choice of procedure.
Seek prompt care if you cannot urinate, have a prolapse that will not go back in and is painful or bleeding, or have fever with pelvic pain. Call 911 in an emergency.

Reconstructive Surgery Expertise
Dr. Solafa Elshatanoufy is board-certified in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, the specialty dedicated to prolapse and pelvic floor repair, as well as in obstetrics and gynecology and advanced minimally invasive gynecology. She completed her urogynecology fellowship at Wayne State University.
She will examine you carefully, explain each surgical option, and discuss non-surgical alternatives so you can make a confident, informed decision.
Planning Your Surgery
- Pelvic examination: to identify which compartments of the vagina are affected and how far.
- Bladder testing: including urodynamic testing when needed, because repairing prolapse can reveal hidden stress incontinence.
- Bowel assessment: when constipation or difficulty emptying is part of your symptoms.
- Health review: to make sure surgery and anesthesia are safe for you.
Surgical Options
The best procedure depends on the type of prolapse, your health and your goals, including whether you are sexually active.
Repairs using your own tissue
- Anterior and posterior repair (colporrhaphy): strengthens the front or back vaginal wall.
- Apical suspension: attaches the top of the vagina to strong ligaments in the pelvis.
- Vaginal hysterectomy with suspension: for uterine prolapse when removing the uterus is appropriate.
- Perineorrhaphy: rebuilds the tissue at the vaginal opening.
Other approaches
- Colpocleisis: a shorter, highly effective procedure that closes the vagina, for women who are not and will not be sexually active.
- Abdominal sacrocolpopexy: suspends the vagina from the tailbone area using mesh placed through the abdomen, which may be discussed for selected patients.
- Combined incontinence procedure: when stress urinary leakage is also present.
We do not use transvaginal mesh for prolapse repair.
All surgery carries risks, including bleeding, infection, urinary difficulty, pain with intercourse and the chance that prolapse returns. Dr. Elshatanoufy will review the risks and expected benefits of each option with you.
Recovery and Results
Many vaginal repairs are done as outpatient or overnight-stay procedures. Most women return to light activity within two weeks and avoid heavy lifting and intercourse for about six weeks. Most women have lasting relief of bulge symptoms, although prolapse can recur over time. Pelvic floor physical therapy and healthy habits such as avoiding constipation help protect your repair.

Dr. Elshatanoufy was truly lovely to work with. I’ve had a hard time pinning down my symptoms but she was willing to hear my concerns and do a thorough examination to rule out more serious conditions. She was thorough, efficient, patient, gentle, and kind during the pelvic examination, which is a vulnerable position for women. I felt that she genuinely cared for my wellbeing. After receiving less than ideal care at a neighboring practice in Katy, I am really grateful to Dr. E for validating my concerns, making me feel heard, and reassured with my next steps.
The waiting room was pretty busy and cold when I went. Suggest bringing headphones and some long sleeves!
