How Uterine Fibroids Are Diagnosed
Fibroids are often first suspected during a pelvic exam. A pelvic ultrasound confirms their size, number and location, and an MRI is occasionally used for treatment planning. Blood tests can check for anemia caused by heavy bleeding. Location matters: fibroids inside the uterine cavity (submucosal) are most likely to cause heavy bleeding, while large fibroids on the outside of the uterus are more likely to cause pressure, frequent urination or constipation.
Fibroid Treatment Options
Not every fibroid needs treatment. The right approach depends on your symptoms, the size and location of the fibroids, your age, and whether you want to preserve fertility. Options may include:
- Monitoring for small fibroids that cause no symptoms
- Medications, including non-hormonal options that reduce bleeding, hormonal birth control, a hormonal IUD, or medications that temporarily shrink fibroids
- Minimally invasive procedures, such as hysteroscopic removal of fibroids inside the uterine cavity, or uterine artery embolization performed by an interventional radiologist
- Myomectomy, which removes fibroids while keeping the uterus
- Hysterectomy, the only permanent cure, for women who have finished childbearing

Uterine Fibroid FAQs
Are fibroids cancer?
No. Fibroids are benign growths. Cancerous changes are very rare, but a uterine mass that grows after menopause should always be evaluated.
Do fibroids go away after menopause?
Fibroids usually shrink after menopause as estrogen levels fall, which is why women close to menopause may choose to manage symptoms rather than have surgery.
Can fibroids cause frequent urination?
Yes. Fibroids that press on the bladder can cause urgency, frequency and difficulty emptying the bladder, which is one reason a urogynecologist is well suited to evaluate them.
Can fibroids affect fertility?
Fibroids that distort the uterine cavity can make it harder to conceive or carry a pregnancy, so treatment is tailored for women who want to become pregnant.
